Octave Aspect Pipe Stress review: CAESAR II under a new name
The most familiar pipe-stress program in the industry has a new owner and a new name. The software engineers rely on is unchanged, and that is the point.
Ask a room of piping stress engineers which program they learned on and most will say CAESAR II. Since Hexagon spun off its plant software as Octave in May 2026, that program is sold as Octave Aspect Pipe Stress. Our assessment places it at 84 on the EPC Index, level with the top of the whole catalogue.
What it does
Aspect Pipe Stress evaluates piping systems under static and dynamic loads against international piping codes. Static analysis covers buried and subsea piping; dynamic analysis covers modal, response-spectrum and time-history methods. Equipment nozzle checks follow API and NEMA standards, and flange analysis covers ASME and EN 1591. Models arrive from plant design systems through PCF import, and Octave documents direct exchange with Forte 3D, Forte 3DWorx and Aspect Pressure Vessel.
Why it scores so highly
Capability earns 9: the code coverage and analysis types match what process, power and offshore projects need. Interoperability earns 8 because PCF import means stress engineers can work from almost any plant design system. Ecosystem earns the maximum 10, and that matters more than it sounds: when owners, checkers and third-party reviewers all read the same output, reviews are faster and arguments are shorter.
Where it is weaker
Deployment scores 6. It remains desktop software, which suits most stress teams but sits apart from the cloud direction of design and information platforms. And for a while the new name will create friction in specifications, licence schedules and job adverts that still say CAESAR II.
Against the alternatives
Bentley AutoPIPE, at 78, is a strong alternative with broad model import and bidirectional links to STAAD.Pro and SACS, and an especially good fit for Bentley-centred teams. ROHR2, at 65, has a loyal following in German-speaking engineering and strong EN-code flange design, but a smaller international talent pool.
Verdict
Aspect Pipe Stress is CAESAR II by another name and remains the reference for pipe stress analysis. Unless your organisation is standardised on Bentley, the familiarity of its output to reviewers is a decisive advantage.
